Good ol’ seemingly boring oats are a true superfood for your gut and therefore overall health.
Oats contain PREbiotics like beta glucan which nourish the beneficial PRObiotics in your gut which then thank you for feeding them by making POSTbiotics ie compounds with benefits ranging from a healthier gut lining to lower inflammation. Not to mention oats can lower cholesterol and boost satiety and may even help with weight loss.
I like add cinnamon, cardamom and ginger to mine for blood sugar balance, digestion support and flavor (holla!) and nut butter to boost satiety and prevent a blood sugar spike.
I also love a little chai spiced date syrup from @justdatesyrup (not sponsored just love). Often it’s the simplest age old foods that are the real superfoods
RECIPE
Yield
1 serving
Ingredients
- ¼ cup old fashioned rolled oats
- a dash of vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp Ceylon cinnamon
- ¼ tsp cardamom
- ¼ tsp ground ginger
- a pinch of salt
- ½ – 1 tsp turmeric
- a splash of milk of choice (2-4 tbsp)
- 1 Tbsp almond or other nut butter
- Date syrup (or maple syrup) for serving
- 2 tsp Goji berries
Method
Bring the oats, vanilla, salt, cinnamon, cardamom and ginger, to a boil with 3/4 cups of water, stirring often.
Lower the heat to a simmer and cook for 10-12 minutes or until the oats take on a creamy texture, adding more water if needed.
Stir in the milk. Then the turmeric.
Ladle the oatmeal into two bowls and divide the almond butter between the two bowls.
Drizzle with date syrup, top with goji berries, and enjoy right away.
